Ehkä muistat biologian tunneilta, miten puhuttiin happosateiden vaikutuksesta luonnon ilmaindikaattoriin, naavaan. Nyt niitä saa jälleen nähdä Etelä-Suomessakin, mutta Lapin puhtaassa luonnossa niitä on runsaasti.
Harvemmin kuitenkaan lienet kuullut luposta, joka on helposti sekoitettavissa naavaan. Naavoja ja luppoja on yhteensä Suomessa kolmisenkymmentä eri lajia. Naavan ja lupon voi erottaa toisistaan venyttämällä: naavalla on kuminauhamainen keskusjänne, mutta lupolla sitä ei ole. Yhtä kaikki, nämä riippuvat jäkälät edelleen kertovat puhtaasta ilmasta, jota on helppo hengittää.
Kanadassa sen ensin keksivät, että ilmaakin voi pullottaa ja suomalaiset seurasivat perästä: uutiset uudesta Suomen vientituotteesta muistan lukeneeni Pekingin vuosinamme, mutta nyt Google-haku tuotti vesiperän. Vieläkö Suomesta viedään ilmaa ulkomaille? Kerro, jos tiedät.
Easy to breathe
During my school years I remember the topic of beard moss being vanished due to acid rains. Now you can again see beard moss even in Southern Finland but in the clean nature of Lapland, there’s plenty. This is the nature’s indicator of AQI, you don’t need the app to tell you.
While living in Beijing, I learned to follow AQI, air quality index, that was never needed in Finland. This indicated whether it is safe to go outside or to stay indoors with several air purifiers by Finnish, Swiss and Swedish companies. That time I also read about bottled air, idea by Canadians and stolen by Finns. Unfortunately now I couldn’t find a hint of whether that company in Finland is still exporting Finnish air abroad.
For Finns, things like clean air and clean, pure tap water are priviliges that I learned to appreciate high only after my years abroad. In case these are something you value highly while traveling, Lapland is a place for you.
Just imagine taking a sip of the best tap water (yes, a lot better than any bottled water in the world) after hot sauna in Levi Log Cabin, peeking out to breathe the cleanest air, seeing your breath steaming because of minus degrees and for the bravest, diving into the white snow – naked of course (don’t worry, if your neighbours are Finns, they couldn’t care less). Then again back to the warmth of sauna and after chilling out next to the fireplace.
